On this day 1991 the Slovenian National assembly adopted and declared the Slovenian Constitution. By this Slovenia also gained legal independence from Yugoslavia.

The Draft was being prepared in August 1990 by a group of legal experts led by Peter Jambrek

The original plan was to adopt the constitution together with the declaration of Slovenian independence in June 1991, but as not all questions were settled, it was finally adopted on December 23rd 1991

Since then it was amended quite a few times lastly the right to drinking water was introduced.
The president of the Slovenian constitutional court Rajko Knez stated that the constitution needs to offer space for interpretation and also possibilities for adaptations.
