In 1694, the French philosopher, writer and historian Voltaire is born. He is considered the greatest representative of European Enlightenment. Among his poetical works is the renowned satirical poem The Maiden of Orleans, and among his dramas the tragedy Oedipus.

In 1783, the first hot-air balloon with a human crew takes to the air. The Brothers Montgolfier's balloon rose above Paris; the air was heated by burning wool and straw.

In 1877, Thomas Alva Edison announces the invention of the phonograph, as they called the predecessor of the gramophone.

In 1926, writer Zofka Kvedrova dies. As a fighter for women's social rights she holds a unique place in Slovenian literature.

In 1996, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed November 21 as World Television Day.

MUSIC HISTORY

1954 - Rosemary Clooney is at the top of the British singles chart with the song 'This Ole House.' In 1981 the song was rearranged by Shakin' Stevens and also reached the top of the charts.

1960 - Ray Charles has four singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: Georgia on My Mind at 5, Ruby at 51, Hard Hearted Hannah at 66, and Come Rain Or Come Shine at 95.

1979 - Dr Hook are at No. 1 on the UK singles chart with 'When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman'.

1981 - Olivia Newton John is No. 1 on the American singles chart with 'Physical'.

1987 - Billy Idol is at No. 1 on the US singles chart with his version of Tommy James 'Mony Mony'.

Leta 1694 se je rodil francoski filozof, pisatelj in zgodovinar Voltaire. Velja za največjega predstavnika evropskega razsvetljenstva. Med pesniškimi deli je najbolj znana satirična pesnitev Devica Orleanska, med dramami pa Edip.

Leta 1783 je poletel prvi balon na topli zrak s človeško posadko. Balon bratov Montgolfier se je dvignil nad Pariz, zrak so ogrevali s kurjenjem volne in slame.

Leta 1877 je Thomas Alva Edison objavil izum fonografa, ki je bil predhodnik gramofona.
