In 1758 the Slovene poet and linguist Valentin Vodnik is born. In 1806 he published his first collection of poems Pesmi za pokušino (Poems for Sampling).
In 1809 one of the greatest German composers of the Romantic period Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdi is born.
In 1845 Karol Glaser, author of The History of Slovenian Literature is born.
In 1933 Slovenian theatre and film actor Polde Bibič is born in Maribor. He became famous for the roles he played in the films Moj ata socilalistični kulak, Cvetje v jeseni, Boj na požiralniku and Kekčeve ukane.
MUSIC HISTORY
1959 - Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens died in a plane crash shortly after take off from Clear Lake, Iowa. The death of Holly is now commonly referred to as 'the day the music died', after Don McLean immortalised the tragedy with his hit American Pie.
1973 - Elton John dominates the American singles chart with 'Crocodile Rock'.
1979 - Blondie is at the top of the charts in Great Britain with 'Heart of Glass'.
2008 - Adele is at No. 1 on the UK album chart with her debut album '19' ('Make You Feel My Love' and 'Chasing Pavements').

Leta 1468 je umrl izumitelj tiskarskega postopka s premičnimi črkami, Johannes Gutenberg. Njegovo prvo tipografsko delo je bilo Sveto pismo na 1282 straneh.
Leta 1758 se je v Šiški pri Ljubljani rodil slovenski pesnik in jezikoslovec Valentin Vodnik. Leta 1806 je izdal prvo slovensko pesniško zbirko Pesmi za pokušino.

1959 - v snežnem metežu v Iowi je strmoglavilo letalo, na katerem so bili glasbeniki Buddy Holly, Big Bopper in Ritchie Valens. Tej tragični nesreči je folk pevec Don McLean posvetil pesem 'American Pie'. Besedilo skladbe, ki je postala prava uspešnica, je zgodba o 'dnevu, ko je umrla glasba'.
