In 1867, the French poet, critic and aesthete Charles Baudelaire dies. He is known for his poetry collection Flowers of Evil.
In 1949, the American actor Richard Gere is born.
In 1997 in Paris, British Princess Diana dies in an automobile accident. Her friend Dody Al Fayed and the chauffeur also die in the accident.

1985 - The album 'Brothers In Arms' by the group Dire Straits has a nine week run at the top of the American albums chart. 25 million copies are sold world-wide.
1991 - Metallica is at the top of the American albums chart with 'Metallica'. On it are the songs ‘Enter Sandman’, ‘Sad But True’, ‘The Unforgiven’ and ‘Nothing Else Matters’.
1997 - Oasis is at the top of the British albums chart with 'Be Here Now'. In just one day more than a million copies were sold.
