In 1846 the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz is born. Among his most famous novels are Little Knight, With Fire and Sword, and Quo vadis?.

In 1891 Music Hall was dedicated in New York City. It was later renamed Carnegie Hall.

In 1949 with an international treaty the Council of Europe is founded, with its seat in Strasbourg. The newly established Council represents the first organized movement for the unification of Europe.

In 1959 actress Annette Bening is born.

Leta 1818 se je v Trieru rodil nemški filozof in politik Karl Marx, ki je skupaj s Friedrichom Engelsom zasnoval marksizem.

Leta 1821 je na britanskem otoku Sv. Helena v izgnanstvu umrl francoski vojskovodja in cesar Napoleon Bonaparte.
