In 1838 the inventor Samuel Morse first demonstrated the telegraph for the first time, and then on this day in 1858 for the first time he successfully tested the electric telegraph.
In 1997 Primož Peterka, not yet 18 years old, became the first Slovene to win in the overall New Year ski jumping tournament.

Leta 1412 se je rodila Ivana Orleanska, francoska junakinja, ki je leta 1429 s pomočjo 800 ljudi pregnala Angleže.
Leta 1745 se je rodil Etienne-Jacques De Montgolfier, pionir letenja z baloni, z bratom Josephom-Michelom sta izdelala prvi balon na vroči zrak.
Leta 1822 se je rodil Heinrich Schliemann, nemški arheolog ki je uspešno izkopaval Trojo, Mikene in Tirins. Odkril je znane kraljeve grobove.
