In 1566, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman the Magnificent, who in 1521 took Belgrade, dies. He was an irrepressible conqueror who during his reign of 46 years made the Ottoman Empire the most powerful state in the world. At its height, the Empire stretched from Vienna to the Arabian Peninsula.
In 1683, the French economist and statesman Jean Baptiste Colbert, chief representative of mercantilism, dies. As Finance Minister of King Louis XIV he managed to create a European economic power.
In 1766, the English chemist and physicist John Dalton is born. He became the founder of the atomic theory of matter, which was first set up on an experimental basis. He was colour blind, and colour blindness is called Daltonism after him.
In 1901, in Ljubljana the first tramway appears on the city's streets.
In 1997, the British Princess Diana is buried. She died on 31st August in a tragic car accident in Paris.

Leta 1522 je španski pomorščak Juan Sebastian del Cano končal prvo potovanje okoli sveta. Na pot se je podal skupaj s Fernandom Magellanom, ki je za to ekspedicijo pripravil pet ladij in 270 mornarjev. Na cilj je prišel le z eno ladjo in osemnajstimi mornarji.
Leta 1566 je umrl Sulejman I. Veličastni, ki je leta 1521 zavzel Beograd. Nezadržni osvajalec je po bitki pri Mohaču osvojil skoraj celotno Ogrsko in tri leta pozneje prodrl do Dunaja.
Leta 1683 je umrl francoski gospodarstvenik in državnik Jean Baptiste Colbert. Kot finančnemu ministru kralja Ludvika XIV. mu je uspelo ustvariti evropsko gospodarsko silo.
