In 1844, the Slovenian linguist Jernej Kopitar dies. He wrote Grammatik der slavischen Sprache in Krain, Karnten und Steyemark. Vuk Karadžić Stefanović helped him write the Serbian grammar and vocabulary. He was also occupied with the reform of the Slovenian alphabet. In 1934, the first batch of 137 prisoners arrived at Alcatraz.

In 1941, Winston Church travelled with a group of collaborators on the ship Prince of Wales to Newfoundland for secret talks with Franklin Roosevelt. They signed the Atlantic Charter, which became the foundation for the establishment of the United Nations.

In 1950, the American inventor Stephen Wozniak, who co-founded Apple Computer with Steve Jobs, is born.

In 1984, Carl Lewis wins his fourth gold medal in the 1984 Summer Olympics.

Leta 1844 je umrl slovenski jezikoslovec Jernej Kopitar. Napisal je delo 'Grammatik der slavischen Sprache in Krain, Karnten und Steyemark'.

Leta 1924 se je v severni steni Triglava smrtno ponesrečil slovenski alpinist in pisatelj Klemen Jug.

Leta 1934 so odprli zapor Alcatraz pri San Franciscu.

Leta 1938 je kraljevina Jugoslavija ustanovila Akademijo znanosti in umetnosti Slovenije, kot tretjo jugoslovansko znanstveno akademijo.
