Leta 1844 je v Ljubljani umrl slovenski botanik Franc Hladnik, ki je sestavil popoln herbarij kranjskega rastlinstva, v Ljubljani pa je leta 1809 ustanovil botanični vrt.
Leta 1844 se je rodil nemški inženir Carl Friedrich Benz, izumitelj dvotaktnega plinskega motorja in enocilindrskega štiritaktnega motorja z notranjim izgorevanjem.
