Slikarka Ejti Štih živi in ustvarja v Boliviji že skoraj 40 let. *** Ivana Kobilca is hailed as the greatest Slovenian woman painter. Her Woman Drinking Coffee, which is the central character in the new image of our show, is believed to have been her favourite. The dark, Rembrandt-like, mysterious old lady has been nicknamed the Slovenian Mona Lisa. Alan Hranitelj is an outstanding costume designer. His creations are true works of art that have embellished countless opera and theatre performances in Slovenia and abroad. Painter Ejti Štih has been living and working in Bolivia for almost 40 years. She is considered the most recognisable painter and gallerist of South America. Every year she likes to return to Slovenia – her original homeland – and to Bled. The ridge above the village of Jamnik is an exceptional vantage point, and the church at its top, the most photogenic in Slovenia. Photographers from all over the world come to Jamnik to capture the beautiful panorama of the Kamnik and Savinja Alps and the Karavanke mountain range with the church featured in the foreground. The roof of the world – the Himalayas – has long personified man’s dreams and courage. At the beginning, this path of success was paved by men, but in the 1980s, they were joined by their female counterparts.
Njena slikovita kulisa gorskih vrhov in neokrnjene narave je posejana z osamljenimi domačijami. Trentarski muzej danes pripoveduje o bogati kuturni krajini in preteklem življenju v tej dolini. V Sloveniji uspeva več kot 3500 različnih rastlinskih vrst. To jo uvršča med najbolj raznolike in rastlinsko bogate dežele v Evropi. Bogastvo slovenskih rastlinskih vrst že 210 let raziskuje, predstavlja in ohranja ljubljanski botanični vrt, ki deluje v okviru ljubljanske Univerze. *** Vlasta Zorko from Maribor was the first established Slovenian female sculptor. She signed her name to the largest number of publically realized projects. Although 86, she remains active sculpting at her studio in Maribor her characteristic figurines of women. Over the course of her career, she made more than 1,000. Katarina Rešek Kukla is a versatile artist: a DJ, a musician and a writer of lyrics. As a young girl, she sang in choirs, and played drums and cello. She is particularly fond of the latter, because she feels that the sound of the cello is similar to that of the human voice. She holds a BA in film directing from the Ljubljana Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film, and Television. The most scenic part of Radovljica is certainly its old city centre, where a defensive wall and ditch enclose unique examples of medieval architecture. The picturesque old buildings in its central Linhart Square take visitors a few centuries into the past. The upper Soča Valley and the spring of the Soča river are located in the Trenta Valley. Its vibrant backdrop of mountain peaks and intact nature is peppered with lone homesteads. The Trenta Museum today tells the story of a rich cultural landscape and of life in the valley as it once was. More than 3,500 plant species flourish in Slovenia. This makes its plant life one of the most diverse and rich in Europe. The Ljubljana Botanic Gardens, which operate under the auspices of the University of Ljubljana, have been researching, presenting, and preserving the treasure trove of Slovenian plant species for 210 years.
*** Predjama Castle in the vicinity of the famous Postojna Cave is undeniably the most picturesque castle in Slovenia. The stunning construction, built into a 123-metre-high rock face, has been stirring the imagination for centuries. Its hidden treasure was discovered less than three decades ago. Architect Jože Plečnik’s creations can be seen in many European cities, but the mark he left on the Slovenian capital was so strong that we refer to it as Plečnik’s Ljubljana. His house in Ljubljana’s Trnovo district, which is also considered an architectural pearl of the 20th century, is not only a museum but also an important study centre. Andreja Peklar is a painter, illustrator and author of children’s books. Her illustrations also make wonderful additions to textbooks and magazines for children and teens. She has received many prestigious national and international awards and honours. Peace, quiet and beautiful pristine nature is what visitors to Vremščica are looking for. On clear days, the views from this Karst plateau extend to the peaks of the Julian Alps on one side, and the Adriatic Sea on the other. In spring, its extensive meadows and pastures are covered with typical Alpine and Mediterranean flowers and plants. The sound of sheep can be heard once again. In children’s books, snails are depicted as charming slow animals but in reality, they are seen as anything but that. So much so, that we chase them away from our gardens and lawns. For scientists, however, these molluscs are very interesting creatures. In Slovenia, there are over 400 species of snails, and they can be found everywhere – even underground.
V galeriji Murska Sobota so zato pripravili obsežno razstavo likovnih del in jo naslovili Osamljenosti – izrazi tesnobe v prekmurski umetnosti.
*** SIEVE MAKING For 400 years, horsehair was used to make colorful sieve plates in the villages between Škofja Loka and Kranj. The sieves were then exported around the world. This old craft completely died out, but it's now slowly being brought back to life. THE CITY MUSEUM OF LJUBLJANA For more than a century, the City Museum of Ljubljana has played an important part in the story of the Slovenian capital. It allows visitors to gain a deeper understanding of life in the city and gives them a new perspective on Ljubljana's streets and buildings. PRIMOŽ OBERŽAN Primož Oberžan is a versatile creator, researcher, philosopher – and a musician in his heart and soul. He is the founder of the percussion band The Stroj and continues to develop his interest for the industrial aesthetic as the Federmeister. JAKA BABNIK Photographer Jaka Babnik is a cultural sociologist and a historian. His photos immerse observers into various dimensions of space and time. The context of the objects he captures in his images is just as important. THE OLM GENOME The world-renowned explorer, naturalist, and environmentalist Sir David Attenborough once said that the olm was one of the ten animals that he would take with him aboard Noah’s Ark. Perhaps the elucidation to this statement is also hidden in our report about the unscrambled genome of the olm.
V Litiji oživljajo opuščeni rudnik svinca in barita Sitarjevec. Ko so raziskovalci po skoraj 50 letih vstopili vanj, so bili presenečeni. V njem so odkrili edinstvene limonitne kapniške tvorbe, izredno hitro rastoče kapnike in druga naravna bogastva. Sitarjevec je postal naravna dediščina najvišjega pomena. Kotanje so značilnost kraškega sveta.
Barba in Niko Štembergar Zupan izdelujeta uporabno in okrasno.
*** Kranj is the fourth largest Slovenian town, and capital of the Gorenjska region. It was this town that gave the historical land of Carniola, its name. The town’s medieval city centre has been declared a historical and cultural monument. Snežna jama or Snow Cave on Raduha holds a special place amongst more than 12,000 known Slovenian caves. Located at over 1,500 metres above sea level, this is the highest-lying tourist cave in the country. Even though high alpine caves typically have few cave formations, this cave features many of them. The Geographical Museum in Ljubljana stores maps of different dimensions and subject matter, dating from the 16th through to the 20th century. Most cover Slovenian territories and neighbouring lands. The first map to reference Slovenian territory as an separate unit was drawn in the middle of the 16th century. Painter Ana Zavadlav found her calling in illustrating books, predominately for children and teenagers. Her illustrations delight readers and the professional community alike. Though ceramic artist Ana Haberman has trained as a cultural anthropologist, she found working with clay and bluish-green glazes so alluring that she dedicated herself to making unique ceramic pieces. Each piece is hand-made, mainly by employing the ‘pinching’ method.
Bela krajina je dežela tradicije in neokrnjene narave. Slikarko Joni Zakonjšek zaznamujejo narava in zenovski dojemanje sveta. Tolminska korita so ena največjih naravnih znamenitosti Posočja. *** In the southeast of Slovenia lies Bela krajina, a very special region with a long tradition, which is partly due to its remoteness from the main transport routes. It boasts a pristine nature as well as a unique and living cultural heritage. Wood has been a traditional building material in the Alpine region for centuries. The international Triple Wood project, which has brought together seven countries from the Alpine region, including Slovenia, was started with the desire to promote good practices in sustainable timber construction. An example of such construction is a tree house in Celje, which has won the European Carbon Smart Communities Award. Ornithologist Tomaž Mihelič is a remarkable expert on birds. He has been involved in numerous bird protection and conservation projects at the national bird watching and research society “DOPPS – Birdlife Slovenia”. One of his most recent and major projects is the latest, Atlas of Birds of Slovenia, of which he is a co-ordinator and co-author. The painter Joni Zakonjšek is characterized by nature and a Zen-like perception of the world. Although her basic motifs are simple, she achieves the desired effect through layers of colour and the play of light. The Tolmin Gorges are one of the biggest natural attractions of Posočje, an area along the Soča River in the west of the country. These picturesque and wild gorges represent the lowest and probably the most beautiful entry point into Triglav National Park.
Zakojška grapa v Cerkljanskem hribovju skriva divjo, neokrnjeno naravo. *** WETLANDS Wetlands are one of the most endangered ecosystems of our planet. Those that are recognized as internationally important are protected by the Ramsar Convention. Three Slovenian wetlands have in fact made it to the Ramsar List – Lake Cerknica, the Sečovlje Saltpans and the Škocjan Caves. SNEŽNIK CASTLE Snežnik Castle, situated in the south of the country, on the edge of extensive forests, is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Slovenia, and one of the few that has managed to preserve its original fittings from the second half of the 19th century. It was first mentioned in written records in 1269 in connection with the Lords of Snežnik of the time. After the Second World War, the castle went into the hands of the state and is now managed by the National Museum of Slovenia. THE ROMAN CELEIA In the underground of today's Celje, the third largest city in Slovenia, there is a unique archaeological site on display to its visitors. The remains of the Roman Celeia can be found there, a rich and highly populated city also referred to as the second Troy. A walk through the ancient labyrinths reveals the beauty of Celeia, which was completely destroyed by the Huns in 475. PAINTER TOMAŽ PERKO Tomaž Perko is one of the few master painters who is still adept at the old painting techniques of applying countless glazes and modelling in colour. He is an excellent portrait painter, a sensitive observer of nature and a leading representative of sacral painting in Slovenia. THE ZAKOJCA RAVINE The Cerkno hills in the west of Slovenia are crisscrossed with numerous ravines and gorges, hiding wild, unspoiled nature. Most of the ravines are difficult to hike or are inaccessible for ordinary hiking. The Zakojška grapa or the Zakojca Ravine doesn’t have a marked pathway either, so visiting it is a true adrenaline experience.

Ivančič has been captivating social media users with his outstanding landscape photography for a number of years. POTTER FRANC KREMŽAR Pottery has been one of the oldest and most widespread crafts in Slovenia, yet there is less and less interest in it. In the town of Komenda and the surrounding villages, there have always been a lot of active potters since the area abounds in rich high-quality clay deposits. Nowadays, Franc Kremžar is one of the few remaining craftsmen, who continue to produce traditional clayware. A HERBAL GARDEN IN SLOVENSKE KONJICE Slovenians are very enthusiastic about gardens and gardening. At Sveta Ana in the heart of Slovenske gorice, which is best known for winemaking, Mr and Mrs Kolarič have created a wonderful herbal garden with over 250 healing plants.

The church is well adorned with frescoes, which were restored a few years ago. Since many paintbrushes had dabbled over it, there was a serious dilemma about what to preserve. The Early Baroque church was a representative of the “white baroque”, which means that it had no painted decorations for decades. PAINTER MOJCA SENEGAČNIK Painter Mojca Senegačnik lives and works in the middle of the picturesque Karst landscape. Her paintings are a sort of combination between painting and illustration.
