The most tourists come to the Škocjan Caves during summer months, especially in August. Last year 109,677 people visited the park, while this year the number of visitors has already exceeded 77,000. Some facts for comparison: by the end of last July the number of visitors was approximately 57,200, and in the same period this year it exceeded 67,500.
Approximately 52,000 guests were from abroad, mostly from Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Czech Republic, while the number of tourists from France, Poland, Hungary and Benelux countries is growing. Yet the Škocjan Cave Park representatives are warning that such a large number of visitors presents a heavy environmental burden to the park and the caves, as the primary duty of the public institute is protection and preservation of the nature's underground gem.

The increase of the number of visitors is partly due to the constant investments into the cave infrastructure. Mainly with European funds the electric installation has been renovated, and the tourist route. In May a new information point was set, and a renovated museum collection on the history of the discovery of caves at the reception centre of the Park. The archaeological museum collection at the Delez Homestead has been renovated as well.
Organized guidance and distribution of groups
Due to the increased visit to the park great attention is paid to guidance and careful scheduling of the previously announced groups. In this way they try to assure a more uniform distribution of visitors throughout the day. Yet they wish to keep in genuine contact with the visitors through guides and informers, as they consider such approach a must for safe and quality guidance.
