The winner of the 38.4-kilometer stage was Tom Dumoulin from the Netherlands. Špilak came 18 seconds behind the winner, and was one whole second faster than the time-trial specialist Fabian Cancellara. Thomas lost 36 seconds in the last part of the time-trial stage.
Thibaut Pinot, leading after the eight stages, was left whole minute and 50 seconds behind, and finished in the fourth place. Thus Špilak finished five seconds ahead of Thomas, and Domoulin took the third place 19 seconds behind.

"I am very happy. I would like to thank to my team Katusha; my team colleagues helped me a lot during this week. It is the biggest victory of my career. The time-trial was very difficult, but it suited me perfectly. The route was to my taste, up and down all the way. I gave my best, and I was rewarded," Špilak couldn't stop smiling.
