Sport climber Janja Garnbret, cyclist Tadej Pogačar and the national men's basketball team won the main awards at the 2021 Athlete of the Year ceremony last night. Garnbret, who won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, has been named female athlete of the year multiple times already but said she was still pleased.
Pogačar, who won his second consecutive Tour de France this year, was named male athelete of the year. He said he would have loved to attend the event but was advised not to due to health concerns.
The award is decided by a poll conducted by the Association of Sport Journalists, which includes 115 reporters.
