Grilc, one of the most accomplished Slovenian freestyle snowboarders, has been killed in a snowboarding accident in the Austrian ski resort of Sölden.
According to media reports, he was part of a film crew inspecting a site for filming as he fell and hit his head on a snow-covered rock in a closed section of the resort.
The Austrian press agency APA said that Grilc, 38, suffered a fatal head injury and that he was not wearing a helmet.
He has four podium finishes in the World Cup, with the sole victory coming in London in 2010 in acrobatic jumps.
