The disease, commonly known as mišja mrzlica in Slovene, can be fatal in cases but there have not been any fatalities recently. Last year there were 45 cases.

The disease is spread by rodents, who health officials say have benefitted from higher temperatures and milder winters.

The 231 cases this year is a record since officials began monitoring the number of cases, in 1983.
