Škocjanske Jame, an impressive underground system, is celebrating 200 years since welcoming its first visitors. The occasion was used to measure the cave system once again. It showed that the UNESCO site's biggest chamber is bigger than believed and that it is in fact the second biggest underground chamber in Europe.
In comparison to previous measurements the biggest chamber – called the Martel hall is now 2.55 million cubic meters big, the old measurement was 2.2 million cubic meters.
The caves became a tourist destination in 1819, when an official log of visitors was started.
The first path through the caves was built in 1823 by the local Matej Tominc, who is considered the pioneer of tourism of Škocjan Caves.
The caves have so far welcomed about four million visitors.
