Railway operators from Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia agreed on the link in Ljubljana by signing a memorandum on cooperation.

They also called for the extension of the new link to Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece and other countries in the region.

After 1990, railway transport between Slovenia and Serbia plunged by 92%.
