Today is another work-free day as Slovenia celebrates Independence and Unity Day. The day remembers the announcement of the 1990 independence referendum, in which Slovenians voted overwhelmingly in favour of leaving the then Yugoslavia. Almost 95% of those who turned out to vote opted for independence. Turnout was just under 90%.
Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar hosted an open-doors day at the Presidential Palace today. Addressing the visitors she stressed the importance of unity and solidarity. The main ceremony marking Independence and Unity Day was already held on Friday evening.
