The national holiday celebrates the centenary of the reunification of Prekmurje Slovenes with the rest of the country, ending 900 years of Hungarian rule. The region came under the authority of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes as part of the 1919 Versailles Peace Treaty following WW1.

The state ceremony is to be held in Beltinci, a small rural town south of the region's biggest city, Murska Sobota, this evening. The keynote speaker will be Prime Minister Marjan Šarec.
