The Supercomputer Vega has been formally launched in Maribor. The prime minister said he was pleased to see Slovenia appear on the global map of computer super powers.

Vega can do 6.9 million billion computing operations per second, making it one of the most powerful computers on the planet.

It is the first in a series of eight planned high-performance computing (HPC) centres in the EU.

Margaret vestager of the european commission stressed the important contribtuions of such machines.

Vega is named after 18th-century mathematician and physicist Jurij Vega.
