Prime Minister Janez Janša has assured Slovenian citizens who have deposits in Sberbank that their savings are safe. The bank's European division has been forced to suspend operations. Withdrawals today are limited to 400 euros and the bank's offices remain closed.
Jana Benčina Henigman of the bank said they were doing everything they could for employees and customers.
The central bank is looking into ways to resolve the situation.
Sberbank is the only bank in the Slovenian banking system that is Russian-owned. The bank employs about 400 people and has been in Slovenia for 10 years.
