St Martin's Day, observed on 11 November, is the day when, in folk tradition, grape juice turns into wine. The weekend ahead of it is, in Slovenia, also one of the most party-dense ones and always accompanied by increased police patrols.

The biggest public celebration marking St Martins Day will be held in Maribor on Monday when 20,000 people are expected to gather in the center of Slovenia’s second-largest city.

This year's wine harvest produced about 66 million liters of wine, which is some 30% less than last year.

In the days around St Martin's Day, a dinner of roast goose, red cabbage and mlinci, a softened dry flatbread, is served at family meals.
