Karst cuisine
The Karst, a limestone plateau in the south-west of Slovenia, has been alluring visitors with its unique features for centuries. Many find it most fascinating in the autumn, when the Karst radiates in the lively colours of vines and scarlet sumac, with nature bearing her delicious fruits. It is then that the locals usually organise the ‘Month of the Karst Cuisine’, a culinary event offering the most typical local Karst dishes.
Chairs by Janez Suhadolc
Architect and graphic designer Janez Suhadolc refers to himself as ‘a small-scale architect’. For more than two decades he has been engaged in the designing and making of furniture, chairs in particular. During this time he has created a plethora of bespoke chairs, the most famous among them being the two which were made for the former Pope, John Paul II, when he visited Slovenia.
An exhibition on Bloudek
Stanko Bloudek is known to the general public as a ski-jump constructor, which brought him international recognition. In the 1930s, his ski jump at Planica made the venue among the most important international sports centres. He also designed other ski jumps in Slovenia and abroad, in particular in Austria, where he also worked as an advisor in the correction works in Oberstdorf and Kulm. The exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of his death portrays him also as an airplane constructor, an inventor and an all-round athlete.
Gradež and the fruit-drying house
The village of Gradež near Velike Lašče, about 25 kilometres south of Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, has been putting a lot of effort into preserving its local cultural heritage. Among their endeavours, the local people have managed to restore a 70-year-old fruit-drying house, the only such facility in Slovenia. The ecologically grown fruit is dried here in the traditional manner, with no additives or preservatives.
A chocolate-making workshop
About two decades ago hardly any local chocolate production facilities could be found in Slovenia. Now there are several excellent chocolate-making workshops producing chocolates which are a treat for both the taste buds and the eye, a happy combination for those who indulge in chocolate.
