Kočevje
Kočevska region the most mysterious Slovenian region in the south-east of the country.   As much as 90 % of the region is covered by forests and the area is considered among the best preserved parts of nature not only in Slovenia but also in Europe. The reason for this, besides the remoteness of the region, is a rather special history that marked this part of Slovenia after the Second World War.The population has almost completely changed. Many villages were destroyed and have been overgrown with forest; for decades a large part of Kočevska was proclaimed a closed area. These major changes have left an indelible mark on the town of Kočevje, the centre of this mysterious region.
Virgin forest Rajhenavski Rog
The wood by the lake Reško jezero, which has been registered as a natural reserve and left to develop without human interference, provides nesting ground to one of the rarest species of eagle in Slovenia – the white-tailed eagle. More than 120 years ago, it was here in Kočevska that deliberate protection of nature started, so today, Slovenia is one of the few European countries that can boast of  virgin forests or their remains. From 12 altogether, as many as 6 can be found in Kočevska.
Karst caves in the Kočevska Region
A special feature of Kočevska is its Karst underground. The forests are crisscrossed with Karst caves, sinkholes and chasms. A few thousand caves have already been discovered but most of them are closed to the public. Visitors have relatively easy access to the caves known as Željnske jame, which also feature natural windows and bridges.
Woodenware Museum in Ribnica
For at least five centuries, the woodenware craft has been a characteristic feature of Kočevska and the neighbouring Ribnica Valley. To a small extent it’s been preserved until today.
The Miklova Hiša museum, located in Ribnica Castle, tells us more about the ethnographical heritage of this area.
The forest honey from Kočevska
The nature in Kočevska is exceptionally well-preserved. It’s no wonder therefore that honey made by the bees in these forests is among the best-quality honey by world measure. The forest honey from Kočevska even bears the Protected Designation of Origin label.
