Medical innovations
MESI, a Slovenian start-up established only four years ago, has developed into a successful producer of innovative medical devices. With their ankle-brachial index measuring device having become a real hit, they are now competing for a prestigious multi-million dollar award at the Qualcomm Tricorder X PRIZE. Their device for home diagnostics which will be able to diagnose 15 most common diseases has brought them a place among ten finalists from all over the world.
Photographer Matej Peljhan
Clinical psychologist and passionate photographer Matej Peljhan is striving to help people with the use of therapeutic photography. His photographic work has already earned him several awards. His most resounding photographic opus “Little Prince”, which bears a deep message, is a story about Luka, a boy suffering from muscular dystrophy, whose wish it is to do all the things his peers are able to do. Peljhan made his dream come true and we can even see Luka play basketball in the photos.
The wine-growing region of Bizeljsko in the east of the country features a unique attraction – the so-called repnice, caves dug into sandstone that farmers used once for storing their produce, including turnips which gave the caves their name. The caves have become a great tourist attraction. Today they are mainly used for storing bottled wines as sand cellars are ideal for maturing wine.
Industrial designer Barbara Prinčič
Barbara Prinčič is an industrial designer committed to sustainable design, and a dedicated lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana. This year her ‘5x5 Chair’ has brought her a silver award at A’ Design, one of the most prominent design competitions in the world. The award was granted in the category Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design.
Autumn on Lipanca
While the first snow has already covered the highest Alpine peaks, the lower-lying areas are still basking in autumn colours. Although each season features unique beauty, many will swear that in the mountains, autumn is the most picturesque season. Let’s see Mount Lipanca above Pokljuka in the north-west of the country.
