Piran's Municipal Gallery
The Municipal Gallery in Piran is one of the most important art exhibition spaces on Slovenia's Adriatic coast.
The previously decrepit building was restored in its entirety last year. Vienna-based architect Boris Podrecca, who is of Slovenian descent and had previously designed the new look of Piran's central square where the gallery's palatial building is located, has now created an attractive and wide-open exhibition space.
Skier Tina Maze
The Slovenian female skier Tina Maze is this year's best skier in the world. She has lived a difficult-to-repeat story of achievement, while setting new milestones in the sport of alpine skiing. By a considerable margin, she surpassed the 2000-point mark in the World Cup, won three Crystal Globes - two small ones in addition to the big Globe - and three medals at the World Championships in Schladming - a gold medal and two silver ones.
Industrial designer Nina Mihovec
Industrial designer Nina Mihovec, along with her company Wilsonic Design, which she founded more than a decade ago, is a true success story. She has received a number of prestigious design awards. Her breakthrough into the world of design was made possible by her Designer of the Year 2005 Award, with which she was recognized for her design of the Action camper trailer.
Underwater photographer Ciril Mlinar
Ciril Mlinar, nicknamed "Cic", is one of Slovenia's most experienced underwater explorers. He is involved with underwater and cave photography, video, and film; he is also the author of several natural science films. He was the first in the world to make images of the proteus or human fish in its natural environment.
Trebnik Mansion
At Trebnik Mansion in Slovenske Konjice, the tradition of herbalism, which has existed in this north-eastern Slovenian town for centuries, is still alive and well today.
A once abandoned and derelict mansion, which is still waiting to be restored, was given a new role at the end of the 20th century with the opening of an herb gallery and the production of its own line of cosmetics, based entirely on natural ingredients. Old herbalists really did know how to help people on the way to health and beauty.
