Planica Nordic Centre
Planica, an alpine valley in the north-western corner of Slovenia, is the cradle of the sport of ski flying. It was here that, in 1936, a skier first flew past the 100-metre mark and, six decades later, past the magical 200-metre barrier. Planica has long been a source of pride and identity for Slovenians. In December 2015, a new Nordic skiing centre opened here. One of the world’s most modern skiing complexes, it includes eight ski jumping hills of various sizes and, for the first time, superb training and competition facilities for cross-country skiers.
Acrobatic pilot Peter Podlunšek
This year, Slovenia’s Peter Podlunšek joined the ranks of the world’s top 14 acrobatic pilots when he was listed in the Master Class at the Red Bull Air Race, aviation’s equivalent to Formula 1 car racing. His first competition in that elite category takes place in mid-March at the race in Abu Dhabi.
Painter Rok Zelenko
Painter Rok Zelenko comes from one of the largest artistic families in Slovenia. As a figural painter, he is known primarily for his landscapes and portraits, but he also works in ceramics and illustration. He draws his inspiration from the colourful Mediterranean world of Istria, where he lives and works.
Puppeteer Eka Vogelnik
Eka Vogelnik is an all-round artist – painter, illustrator, set designer, costume designer, and theatre director, but most of all she’s a puppet-maker, and her unique creations have made an impact on the world of Slovenian puppetry. So far she has created more than fifty puppets. This is also the number of theatre productions, dance performances, and television shows she has designed, directed, and written scripts for.
Soriška Planina is a plateau that rises gently above the almost 1,300-metre-high Bohinj mountain pass. Soriška planina is the starting point for a number of easy hiking trails to the surrounding peaks, while in winter, it becomes one of Slovenia’s smaller centres for winter sports. Here too, amidst the natural beauty, we find remnants of fortifications from times of war.
