MINORITE MONASTERY
The coastal town of Piran abounds in historical sites, such as the Minorite Monastery and the Church of St. Francis. The former, which has been fulfilling its spiritual and cultural mission for over seven centuries, is without doubt one of the most beautiful of its kind on Slovenian soil.
JAVORCA MEMORIAL CHURCH
The region of Posočje in the western part of Slovenia is scattered with World War II sites. One of the most beautiful of these is the Javorca Memorial Church of the Holy Spirit, perched above the town of Tolmin. This year this unique cultural landmark is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
SLOVENE ALPINE MUSEUM
Though Slovenes are well known as a mountain-loving nation and have been contributing to shaping the world history of Alpinism for over a century, Slovenia had to wait until 2010 for its first Alpine museum. This year, the now well-established museum, which is located in Mojstrana, at one of the most popular gateways to the Triglav National Park, was awarded the King Albert Mountain Award. This prestigious award is granted by the Swiss King Albert I Memorial Foundation to persons or institutions that have rendered exceptional, sustainable services in connection with the mountains of the world.
KOSMAČ CRAFT WORKSHOP
In the Kosmač craft workshop, located in the old shoe-making town of Tržič, one-of-a-kind handmade wooden products are being made with the aim of preserving and reviving Slovenia’s folk heritage, and that of the Tržič area in particular. One of the workshop’s most remarkable products is its replica of a traditional cobbler’s lamp, which might also be considered as an interesting Christmas gift.
AUTUMN IN THE KARST
A visit to the Karst, the magnificent limestone landscape in the southwestern part of Slovenia, is a unique experience all year round. Many believe, however, that the Karst is at its most beautiful in the autumn, when it presents itself as a splendid tapestry of colour and delights its inhabitants with the fruits of farm and vineyard. And fortunately for us, regional specialities from cellar and stove the locals are only too happy to share with their guests!
