On 15 May 1990, the then Yugoslav authorities demanded that the Territorial Defense hands their weapons over to Yugoslav People's Army (JNA). On 17 May 1990, the surrender of arms was officially banned the then Defence Minister Janez Janša. The agreement, that weapons should not be handed over, was accepted on 18 May by the governing body of the Republic of Slovenia, which was at the time headed by Milan Kučan.

MCHS was dissolved by the Interior Minister Igor Bavčar in October of the same year. The functions of MCHS were then taken over by the Territorial Defense.
