The circular cable car, built in 1957, shortened the distance from the foot of Pohorje to its summit. "An entire generation before us had dreamed about it, and after the war the youth of Maribor joined forces with firms and initiated the struggle for the first modern device in Yugoslavia, and in our part of southern Europe," the father of the Pohorje cable car Franci Čop said at the occasion.

The cable car gave a strong impulse to the development of ski sport and tourism at the Maribor Pohorje – only seven years later they hosted the first female world cup race, thanks to diligent and trustworthy people.

"Without a cable car I can't imagine any discussion about skiing, tourism, as it was the time of fast development of winter tourism in Europe, and we were always slightly behind … but the Maribor cable car made it possible for us to keep up," Tone Vogrinec, the legend of the alpine skiing, and a member of the executive board for Alpine skiing at FISRaport explained for TV Slovenija.

Renovated platform for the anniversary
At the 60th anniversary of opening of the cable car Maribor invested in a thorough renovation of the bus stop, and the cable car lower station. The project worth € 120, 000 brought a larger platform in front of the entrance into the cable car station, where parking is not permitted any more.
