In his letter to President Pahor, Janša wrote that SDS has been striving for a more just electoral system, which would allow the voters to choose their representatives directly, and the results of the elections would consequently allow fast and efficient formation of government, and of strong executive authority, and at the same time of a unified and strong opposition as well. "I support proposals for a more successful fight against corruption," said Pahor. At the occasion of this meeting it is the duty of the political summit to consider the warnings given by the anticorruption commission at their resignation on Friday, claiming that the institutions and the system of the state governed by the rule of law raise too many obstacles for a successful work of the commission at fighting the corruption, stressed Pahor, and simultaneously announced an attempt to change the legislation, and to achieve political consensus on improved legal culture.
"I will discuss with party leaders, and the Parliament and the Government during the coming months, the possibility of adopting some of the measures proposed by the CPC, thus making the new Senate's work easier and better," Pahor said, and warned that it would be difficult to predict the successfulness of the meeting, but this opportunity should not be wasted. "Primarily this is an opportunity to do something together, to finish something… we have only two options, to give up, or to fight," was President's opinion.
"I tried to convince CPC to continue with their work, but in the end they won; they claimed that 'one cannot dig deep enough with a teaspoon", Pahor said. He expects concrete proposals from the commission: "Before the end of their mandate CPC will submit concrete proposals for achieving better results in fight against corruption."
Not only the changes in law on integrity are the point, but other laws as well, which would improve the fight against corruption. Unofficially, we learned that the proposals relate to corrections of legislation, preventing overlapping of jurisdiction of CPC and other institutions, precise defining of jurisdiction of individual institutions, and assurance of legal protection in certain cases.
Bratušek: My proposal was not supported
The Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek said after the meeting that her proposal for changes of legislation which would help all the supervisory institutions in fight against corruption was not supported. She suggested all the parliamentary parties should abstain from exerting pressure on supervisory institutions, and not only on CPC, and should support their reinforcement. The parties should refrain from disregarding the judicial system. She promised the government would do everything in its power to make the supervisory institutions stronger, if necessary also by legislative changes.
The present CPC leadership until March 2014
The present leadership of CPC, although in resignation, still operates with full power, yet no longer than until March next year. Pahor will initiate the procedure for nomination of the new Senate of the Commission for the Prevention of Corruption during this week with a public appeal, and expects candidates for the new Senate of the Commission to apply in 30 days.
