The European Commission stressed the need for well-designed systems of social benefits. The commission also says that appropriate measures including active employment policies can help people get better paid jobs.

The commission’s report for last year shows that poverty among people aged 18 to 64 has increased greatly in the period from 2008 to 2012 in two-thirds of EU Member States.

In total more than 108 million people are at risk of poverty in the EU, even if they have a job. Most of them cannot afford to buy essential goods needed for a dignified life.

Slovenia’s share of employees who live below the poverty line due to low wages has also increased during the crisis to around 6%. That means the country is ranked somewhere in the middle in comparison to other member states.
