The hike commemorates the liberation of Ljubljana on 9 May 1945 when loud sirens have announced freedom.

A barbed wire had been placed around Ljubljana in WWII. The city marks the liberation date by organizing hikes along the path were the wire used to be. Many have already walked the 35km long path in recent days. These were mostly school children. But today some main events are taking place, which want to promote exercise and a healthy lifestyle.

The number of people who take part in the event each year has increased a lot in the last decade. Organizers expect around 35,000 visitors. The first such hike was held in 1957. Back then every participant had to wear a 12 kg backpack and a rifle along the 35km ring surrounding Ljubljana. Taking part in the event today is mostly a sign of solidarity and a healthy lifestyle.
