The reason for his resignation was his party’s poor performance at the European parliamentary elections. Agriculture Minister Dejan Židan has been named the party's interim president.

Lukšič is the second casualty of yesterday’s election. Yesterday, Gregor Virant also decided to step down as head of the coalition party DL after his party took a tumble at the election.

Social Democrat MP Matjaž Han said that the fragmentation of the parties on the left was one of the main reasons for their failure to garner more votes.
