Yesterday’s snowfall caused major disruptions throughout Slovenia. The heavy and wet snow damaged plants, giving wine growers, fruit farmers, greengrocers and gardeners a huge headache. This week’s spring frost also hurt their crops.

The relevant authorities are still in the process of assessing the damage caused by the rough April weather. It will take some time before they can release their final reports. “As long as it’s cold outside, as long as everything is green, we can’t tell whether it’s alive or not. After about 10 days, the damaged crops will turn brown. Whatever turns brown will die off,” Miran Naglič of the Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry said.

Heavy damage has been observed in vineyards and orchards. According to preliminary estimates, 60 to 90 percent of vineyards and orchards had been damaged. “In some areas, more than half of all crops could be lost,” Naglič said in desperation.
