American writer Jack London is born. His real name is John Griffith. Influenced by Karl Marx he wrote socialistic novels. Many of his stories were based on his own experiences as a tramp, sailor and gold digger. His important works include Call of the Wild, The Sea Wolf, and White Fang. He commits suicide in 1916.

In 1915 the Rocky Mountains National Park was founded.

In 1964 Fran Ksaver Meško, Slovenian writer and Catholic priest, dies. He wrote several collections of short stories Ob tihih večerih, the novel Na poljani and several legends and stories for young people.

In 1976 the writer of detective stories Agatha Christie dies. Her best known characters were the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and the aged lady with a sharp mind Miss Marple. Poirot first appeared in her first novel which was published in 1920; Miss Marple appeared ten years later in Murder at the Vicarage. Agatha Christie wrote more than 65 novels and numerous short stories, many of her novels were made into films.

In 1984 in Egypt repair works began on the Pyramids of Giza.

In 1998 19 European countries agreed on the prohibition of cloning human beings.
