Jacques Daguerre, French painter and inventor, is born. He is considered a pioneer of photography. The photographic process is called daguerreotype, after him.
In 1901 George Gallup, founder of the famous Institute for Public Opinion Research, is born. His results are published in over a hundred newspapers; there are branch offices in 35 countries.
In 1926, the Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize, but rejected the monetary award, requesting it be used to finance the translation of fellow playwright August Strindberg's works from Swedish into English.
