Fran Miklošič is born. He became one of the most important Slovene linguists. He influenced the Slovenian literary language, especially in the stabilization of orthography.
In 1858 Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf is born. She was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and was best known for her children's book Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige (The Wonderful Adventures of Nils).
