In the English explorer and seafarer James Cook is born. He discovered the archipelago Sandwick and led the first expedition to Australia. Cook was killed in Hawaii in a fight with Hawaiians during his third exploratory voyage in the Pacific in 1779.

In 1782 in Genoa, Italian composer and violinist Nicolo Paganini is born.

In 1835 the Slovenian poet and writer Simon Jenko is born. He mainly wrote patriotic poems and had a strong influence on later poets. Collections of poetry: Obujenke, Obrazi. Tales: Jeperški učitelj, Tilka.


In 1858 Theodore Roosevelt, who became the 26th U.S. President during the years 1901-1909, is born.

In 1904 the first subway in New York was opened.

In 1934 in China begins the famous march of communist troops under the leadership of Mao Zedong, which lasted the whole year. During that time they travelled 12,000 km.

In 1996 the first Ljubljana marathon was held.
