, the Spanish seafarer Juan Sebastian del Cano finished the first trip around the world. He set off with five ships and 270 sailors, at the end he sailed home with just one ship and eighteen sailors.
In 1566 Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman the Magnificent, who in 1521 took Belgrade, dies. He was an irrepressible conqueror who during his reign of 46 years made the Ottoman Empire the most powerful state in the world. At its height, the Empire stretched from Vienna to the Arabian Peninsula.
In 1683 the French economist and statesman Jean Baptiste Colbert, chief representative of mercantilism, dies. As Finance Minister of King Louis XIV he managed to create a European economic power.
In 1766 English chemist and physicist John Dalton is born. He became the founder of the atomic theory of matter, which was first set up on an experimental basis. He was colour blind, and colour blindness is called "Daltonism" after him.
In 1901 in Ljubljana the first tramway appears on the city's streets.
In 1944, the partisan Pohorje Battalion liberates 622 British prisoners of war who had to repair the railway line between Maribor and Dravograd.
In 1997 British Princess Diana is buried. She died on 31st August in a tragic car accident in Paris.
