Two years ago, workers removed the majority of the 200 palm trees that had been put up around the city. The tropical trees did poorly in climate, especially the strong winds, as botany experts warned.
Other palm trees were burned by vandals. Yesterday, the empty holes on the city promenade began to see new trees go up: namely native species of holm, which is threatened in Slovenian Istria.
