Protection of Public Order Act allows use of carbide and other gas mixtures for explosions during certain holidays, where such activity is already a tradition. Persons who are using mortars must have a certificate or attestation of training for firing with a mortar.
For firing with carbide or mortars fireboxes are usually used, therefore the Police warns that these must be adequately protected. They must be surrounded by non-combustible material, and the space around the firebox must be cleaned and free of all combustible materials, while the firebox must be placed at least 50 metres from a forest, and at least 100 metres from major traffic routes and larger settlements.
