The main goal of the congress was to first and foremost to unify the party. The 10th Congress in Celje saw 294 delegates choose new leadership and members of a supervisory board.

President of the party Dejan Židan has been interim leader of the SD party since late May and was the only candidate for the post. The official is serving his third term as agriculture minister. The new vice-presidents of the party are Tanja Fajon and Janko Veber.

SD had seen its popularity fall in the last couple of years. It used to be the most powerful political force in the country to later end up with only six deputies in Parliament, after last year's early elections. In 2014 the party has seen one of the worst election results in its history. Public support for the party has slightly increased since then and now stands at around 8-10.
