Workers’ rights are observed in Slovenia with a 2-day work-free public holiday, on the 1st and 2nd of May. Ahead of the holiday, trade unionists and politicians emphasised the importance of safeguarding workers’ rights. They also highlighted the difficult conditions workers face and the growing number of bankrupt companies.

Slovenia has been marking International Workers' Day as a public holiday since 1948. In the past the holiday usually started off with music in the streets and workers wearing red roses. The holiday is still usually spent outdoors in nature. Another May Slovenian tradition are the maypoles, which can be seen in many villages also today.
