In recent years, a new generation of Slovenian designers has established a reputation for innovative creations. In some cases, that reputation transcends Slovenia’s borders. Lara Bohinc’s designs, primarily her jewelry, have made her a highly valued artist in both Europe and the U.S.

After completing her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, Bohinc set out for the bright lights of the London design scene in 1994 and has lived in the British capital ever since. After obtaining a Master’s Degree at the Royal College of Art, she worked for a number of top design brands, including Gucci, and won the prestigious New Generation Design Award. She later set up her own company, which began to receive considerable attention for her inspired jewelry, as well as wallets, bags, shoes, and other fashion accessories.

One aspect that makes Bohinc’s jewelry unique is the production process. She is not reluctant to employ state-of-the-art technology, including the very latest in computer design. Many of her pieces are made using later cutting, a technique that employs a laser to shape the material. She also employs photolithography to apply some of her more intricate designs directly to the jewelry.

The technology behind Bohinc’s jewelry may be state-of-the-art, but her designs are an intriguing blend of the modern and the timeless. They have not only won her praise and admiration but also loyal customers among the rich and famous. Many of the world’s hottest stars, from Madonna and Cameron Diaz to Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham, wear Bohinc’s designs. Samantha Cameron, the wife of the British Prime Minister, even gave a piece of Bohinc’s jewelry to Michelle Obama, and the model Cheryl Cole frequently wears Bohinc’s creations on the red carpet.

However, Bohinc says that she prefers seeing ordinary people wear her work. Her commitment to design for the people, not just the glamorous, paid off during the global economic crisis. While some jewelry design companies suffered because of the downturn, Bohinc’s business not only survived – it thrived. She even opened her first store, on London’s prestigious Sloane Street, and in 2012, her determination and skills earned Lara Bohinc the prestigious Order of the British Empire.
