According to Šentjernej mayor Franc Hudoklin, the horse blessing in Šentjernej is the biggest such traditional event in the country and is being celebrated for 155 years. Their speciality is the St. Stephen banner, which is being carried at the head of the procession since Slovenian independence in 1991.
According to mayor Hudoklin the event is a contribution to the preservation of the almost 300 year old horse breeding and horse riding tradition in Slovenia. The festivities are also visited by a large number of young people every year. The mayor sees this as an assurance that the tradition in the Šentjernej field will survive and continue.
