He was a bishop in Asia Minor, who died in the first half of the 4th century. Because of his kindness and willingness to help others, he is regarded as a symbol of generosity. A traditional St. Nicholas procession took place in the capital yesterday. St. Nicholas strolled through Ljubljana's center accompanied by angels who gave gifts to the children that were good while Krampuses scared those that were naughty and nice alike.

St. Nicholas's name day is celebrated as a Christian festival with regard to gift giving as well as through the attendance of mass or worship services.
