This year’s theme is dubbed: "Leave no one behind: think, decide and act together against extreme poverty". The United Nations have warned that the gap between the rich and poor undermines the fabric of societies and causes instability.

“In developing countries, about 1.2 billion people have to make do with less than 1.25 dollars a day, and about 2.4 billion people have to live on less than 2 dollars a day,” United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pointed out. He called upon all member states to join forces and act together against extreme poverty. He said: “Our aim must be prosperity for all, not just a select few."

According to government statistics, the at-risk-of-poverty rate in Slovenia was 14.5% in 2013 – up 1 % over the previous year. The risk of social exclusion also increased from 19.6 to 20.4 %.
