These days, the tourist resort of Kranjska Gora should be at the height of its winter tourist season. Unfortunately, its image is not at all wintry – it looks like it were the end of March, not the beginning of January.
I won’t say the existing weather conditions are disastrous; still, they are very poor. On the other hand, it’s a miracle that our ski area at an altitude of 810 metres is operational anyway,” Ms Klavdija Gomboc of the Kranjska Gora Ski Lifts describes the current situation. “So far, we’ve recorded a mere 30% of the last year’s turnover,” she adds.
One of the most important weeks in the winter season
Bad weather has of course deterred a lot of visitors. Traditionally, Kranjska Gora should now be bringing in numerous holiday visitors, especially those from Croatia. “For us, this week is one of the most important weeks in the winter season,” explains Ms Mirijam Žerjav of the local tourist association.
“Hotels are otherwise quite well occupied, as those guests who had booked them in advance are determined to stay regardless of the weather. However, providers of private accommodations have informed us that more than half of guests have cancelled their reservations or have checked out earlier than planned,” she adds.
At the moment, in Kranjska Gora (and elsewhere) they hope very much that meteorologists’ forecasts will come true. According to them, it should be snowing in a week.
