Union leadership in the Velenje coal mine formed into a strike committee. They have explained why they will organize a warning strike next Monday. The committee wants to draw attention to the difficult financial situation of the coal mine.

Holding Slovenske elektrarne, a holding of Slovenian power plants, does not want to pay a fair price for the lignite obtained in Velenje. While the average gross salary at the holding stood at around EUR 4000 last year and the holding had a EUR 120 million profit, the Velenje coal mine has seen an average gross salary of EUR 2309.

With a number of austerity measures implemented the mine has still had a EUR 15 million loss last year. The strike committee said today that if they won’t get the adequate guarantees from the holding’s management by tomorrow, that things will change, they will stage a strike on Monday and will intensify their efforts in March.
